Good design in district web sites is very important to keep families involved. If web sites are too overwhelming families will be less likely to use them. I worked in Kenosha Unified for one school year and I know a lot of my families used the web sit to find out what was going on. The web site is very cluttered but can be navigated with a little effort. I feel that the Racine Unified (where I work now) site is not easy to navigate at all. There is a link at the bottom of the page that says "for Families" but it is small and you have to scroll down to find it. Not many of our schools have individual sites, that would be nice to have so families could just go to the link for their child's school and find out what they need to know.
After talking with my team I realized that I was not talking about our district web site, I was talking about the instec page. Our district page is actually a good web site.
